The facility is the world's oldest continually operated airport, and is the site of many significant aviation firsts, known as the "Field of Firsts." It was established in 1909 after Wilbur Wright came to the field to train two military officers to fly in the government's first aeroplane.
The outdoor exhibit area interprets the aviation history, which began in 1941 as the first African-American owned and operated airfield in the state. The first black Civil Air Patrol squadron in the Washington, D.C. area, called the Columbia Squadron, was formed here.
