Included in this wide span of surf is Assateague State Park, located on Assateague Island. This is the only oceanfront park in Maryland and is a barrier island bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Sinepuxent Bay on the west. This park is a great spot for weekend camping. Its 300 pet-friendly sites fill up fast so be sure to book early. Assateague’s two miles of ocean beaches offer swimming, beachcombing, sunbathing, surfing, and fishing. The bayside gives visitors the chance to explore secluded coves by canoe or kayak. On the fishing front, check out Rudow’s Fishtalk Coastal Fishing Report. If you're not into camping, there are plenty of hotels in Ocean City. From major chains to bed-and-breakfasts and summer rentals, you’ll find lots of great options. Another place for some family fishing is Inlet Park. This conveniently located boardwalk spot has great bottom fishing and crabbing options. The Ninth Street fishing pier is also the perfect place for those who love to fish. Located between Ninth Street and the bay, it's a well maintained pier with fish cleaning tables that are equipped with hoses for easy clean up. Anglers have been catching mostly spot and kingfish with the occasional flounder. Fresh cut bait, like crab or bunkers, are always good to use. It also seems that sand fleas with a piece of fishbite tape to hold are producing the best quality fish.

Looking to just relax and enjoy the outdoors? Tucked away on the lower Eastern Shore is Pocomoke River State Park. This park is well known for the cypress swamps that border the Pocomoke River. Originating in the Great Cypress Swamp in Delaware, it flows southwesterly 45 miles to the Chesapeake Bay. The park provides a base for a vast array of outdoor activities ranging from fishing, biking, birding, boating, hiking, and more. Amenities at the park include camping, cabins, boat launch, picnic areas, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and a swimming pool.

With one of the most varied landscapes in the country, Maryland provides the best camping options for the entire family. The Coastal region boasts accessible history, beautiful scenery, and diverse wildlife that can make for an easy and memorable day or weekend getaway.
