Read's Drug Store Sit-in Marker

This marker commemorates a long-overlooked civil rights milestone: the 1955 sit-in at Read’s Drug store by students from Morgan State and CORE. The sit-in took place five years before the better-known lunch counter protest in Greensboro, NC.

Located on an attractive 319 acre water-front campus, St. Mary's College stands on a historic piece of land first settled in 1634. As Maryland's only Public Honors College, students receive the benefits of a small, liberal arts college with the lower cost of state tuition.

Christ Episcopal Church (King and Queen Parish)

During the War of 1812, the British vandalized the village of Chaptico, doing extensive damage to Christ Church and desecrating its cemetery. Several members of the Francis Scott Key family are buried in the Key Family vault. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places. Over its 300-plus years, Christ Church has offered the people of Southern Maryland a place of spiritual comfort, connection, and renewal.

A Civil Rights Milestone / Catonsville High School 1935

Lucille Scott and Margaret Williams were denied admittance to Catonsville High School. NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall filed suit. Racially separate schools were found to have "some inequalities," bolstering the Brown v. Board of Education case.

A Real Field of Dreams Marker

Jim Wims, a farmer, took acreage out of production for African-American children to have a ball field, which became known as Wims Meadow. Jim’s son Wilson worked to create the Clarksburg Recreation Center, bettering opportunities for his community.

Bowie State University

In 1968, Bowie students demonstrated with other HBCUs, protesting unequal funding, poor school facilities and lack of academic resources. Students led a “study-in” at the Maryland State House and were arrested. Governor Agnew closed the school.

African-American Politicians Marker

Located on the Pennsylvania Avenue Heritage Trail, this historical marker detail many of Old West Baltimore’s civil rights organizations and African-American political leaders.
